Why I Choose a Holistic View

I have been sick for most of my life. I remember missing elementary school classes to travel to the city for multiple doctor’s appointments. In middle school, getting perfect attendance felt like a huge achievement—I still proudly carry the keychain my school awarded me and the other ten students who earned the same honor.

The last four years have been especially tough. For two of them, (⚠️ Trigger warning for emetophobia.) every single day throwing up. Countless doctor’s visits led nowhere, and ER trips were a nightmare. Nothing seemed to help—until I found Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine.

The holistic approaches and alternative medicine advice they provided helped me regain my quality of life, allowing me to continue my journey as a premed student studying for the MCAT. This experience solidified my decision to apply to DO schools, as their philosophy aligns with my vision of practicing medicine.

A holistic approach looks at a person as a whole—addressing not just physical symptoms, but also mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Practices like visualization, Ayurveda, and meditation have helped me more than most pharmaceuticals ever did. That’s not to say pharmaceuticals aren’t important—they absolutely are when needed. But I believe in evaluating a patient through a broader lens to determine the best course of treatment.
